In order to keep Mustang enthusiasts on the edge of their seats, Ford Performance took the most powerful 2024 Mustang, the Dark Horse, to new levels with the official introduction of the race-bred R model built exclusively for the track. It joins the Mustang GT3 and Mustang GT4 already in the model’s racing stables.
This purpose-built race car uses the same 500 horsepower 5.0-litre V8 engine as the Dark Horse, but is fitted with a 6-speed Tremec 3160 manual transmission, a Torsen limited slip differential with 3.73 final drive ratio, race-spec Brembo front and rear rotors and calipers and other competition-oriented parts. Under the Dark Horse R, Ford Performance engineers have fitted the renowned Multimatic DSSV suspension.
Inside, the Dark Horse R has been stripped down to its bare undies in order to fit a full weld-in roll cage, as well as a battery of safety components such as a Recaro FIA racing seat, a quick-release steering wheel, FIA racing harness, FIA fire suppression system and a MoTeC data display and logging system.
The Mustang Challenge is Born
In order to give Mustang Dark Horse R a proper place to race, Ford Performance is also introducing a new racing series: the Mustang Challenge. It is a single-make, IMSA-sanctioned series made for Mustang owners who want to compete amongst each other.
“Mustang Dark Horse R owners will have the opportunity to race and test their driving skills with other Mustang enthusiasts at some of the world's most incredible tracks,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports.
The series will kick off in 2024 and should run a 10 to 12-race calendar alongside other series in North America. The Mustang Challenge has chosen Michelin to develop a specific slick race tire for the Dark Horse R. Each round will consist of two practice sessions, one qualifying session and two sprint races. Contingency payouts and other prizes are planned for overall series champion at the end of the season.
